A FROME man recently won ‘Police Volunteer of the Year’ from Avon and Somerset Police for his work with the Mendip Community Speed Watch.
Awards are given annually to both serving police officers and community volunteers, and the Mendip Community Speed Watch (CSW) team won a host of awards and are currently rated one of the top CSW teams in the whole of Avon and Somerset.
The main award of the evening, the ‘Police Volunteer of the Year’ for Mendip nominated by Avon and Somerset Police, was awarded to Ashley Reay for outstanding work in the field of Community Speed Watch in 2016.
Ashley said, “I was very honoured and humbled to accept the award, and feel I am just the custodian of the award as there are hundreds of volunteers who carry out similar tasks every day who stand by the roadside and carry out other tasks within road safety – all unpaid – in an effort to make the roads of Frome and district as safe as they can.”
Three local people received awards for long-standing service to CSW; Eve Berry and Ashley Reay from Frome and Terry Drake from Holcombe. Two volunteers from Wells were also awarded; David Ball and Carole Peck.
Rex Eastman from Farleigh Hungerford also picked up the main award for outstanding contribution to the community.
