THE December film showing with the Batcombe Film Society is the jolly comedy-drama, The Phantom of the Open.
Being shown on the 9th December, the film is based on a true story. Mark Rylance plays the golfing eccentric Maurice Flitcroft, a shipyard worker who took up golf in middle age. He managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open golf championship and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. Mocked by the press and banned from competing, the indefatigable, shambolic Flitcroft nevertheless returned, gate crashing competitions with a variety of disguises and fake names and undercutting the pomp of the British golf establishment.
Rylance is ably supported by Sally Hawkins as his long-suffering wife and Rhys Ifans as an uppity golf official. (dir. Craig Roberts / 2021 / 102 mins / 12).
The film will be shown at Batcombe Jubilee Hall, doors open 7pm for 7.45pm screening. For further information, please contact Ann Biddle 01373 850307.
