LOCAL American author and Frome Writers’ Collective member, Frederica Noble, is hosting a ‘meet and greet’ to discuss her book ‘The Special Relationship’.
The free event is on Thursday 21st April, at the Tool & Gauge Kitchen, from 7.30pm.
Frederica’s book is part cultural commentary, part relationship coaching, part travel guide, and takes a light-hearted look at her experience of life and love in the United Kingdom as an American woman.
Organisers say, “A smart, career-focused American woman from Los Angeles finds her British Prince Charming, moves to the UK after a whirlwind romance and is overwhelmed with how tricky it is to navigate the culture clash. Sound familiar?
“At the outset, it seemed simple: have a few dates, have a bit of fun. However, as friendship gave way to romance, and romance gave way to marriage and moving from LA to Somerset, neither of them quite saw the culture clash which was coming.
“It has been 20 years since Frederica Hendricks Noble met her Bristol-born husband (who calls her ‘the original Megan Markle’) and moved to the United Kingdom to live and work.
“The Special Relationship details the humorous culture clash that happens when a Black American woman falls in love with a White British man.
“It explores how to navigate English culture and provides readers with insider tips and advice on how to have a successful, modern day Anglo-American relationship. The book also looks at the historical ‘million-dollar heiresses’ who came on the transatlantic marriage trade at the end of the 19th century and compares them with modern day Anglo-American relationships.”
The event is free, but if you would like to pre-order an autographed copy of the book, register on Eventbrite. The Special Relationship can be ordered from your local bookstore or is available to buy online from retailers including: Barnes & Noble, Blackwell’s and Amazon.
