FROME Town Council has announced its intention to take over responsibility for Millenium Green.
Until recently, Frome Town Council had been working with the Millenium Green Trust, who are responsible for the maintenance of the green space, to submit a formal request to Mendip District Council to ask that the freehold (or long lease) of the Green be transferred to the town council.
However, the Millenium Green Trust says that they are likely to dissolve in the near future, due to lack of funds and diminished trustees and volunteers.
Instead, if Mendip District Council agree, the town council intend to take over completely. At the Town Matters meeting last week, councillors agreed unanimously to this and took the opportunity to acknowledge the work of the trust.
Full responsibility for the Green would allow the town council to manage the entire space and maintain the ancient sycamore tree, which is thought to be Frome’s oldest, which lost a limb during a storm in January. During the meeting last week, Chris Stringer, environment manager for the council, offered reassurance that as much of the trunk and branch system as possible would remain.
