A new series of concerts will launch at The Silk Mill in Frome on Tuesday 12th November with a show by Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds, who have received widespread acclaim for their new album, The Hare’s Lament.
In October, the band were awarded Best Band, Best Album and Best Traditional track at the Irish RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, as well as a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Traditional Track, rounding off what has been a busy and successful year for them.
Ye Vagabonds —brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn— grew up playing music together around their hometown of Carlow in south-east Ireland. After moving to Dublin, they quickly became a staple of the live music and session scene in Ireland, playing their own original songs as well as folk songs from Ireland, Scotland, England and America.
The band recently signed to Rough Trade Records’ new folk imprint label, River Lea Recordings, and have been busy touring Ireland, the UK and Europe, opening for acts such as Villagers, Roy Harper and Lisa Hannigan.
Their concert in Frome on Tuesday 12th November marks the first in a planned series— ‘Folk at the Silk Mill’— and will be followed on Saturday 23rd November with a concert by Appalachian folk singer and multi-instrumentalist, Sam Amidon.
Sam —whose material often consists of adventurous re-workings of traditional American ballads, hymns and work songs— last performed in Frome with his wife Beth Orton at the Cheese and Grain. This gig will be the last date on his current UK tour in support of the brand-new EP, Fatal Flower Garden. He will be joined by special guest Sam Brookes, a Bristol-based singer-songwriter who takes his cues from folk revivalist of the 1960s such as Tim Buckley and John Martyn.
