The pedal-powered cinema has raised enough money to go ahead, and plans are now being put in place to make the event a real celebration of cycling.
The movie ‘Ghostbusters’ will be aired on a screen powered by around six – eight bicycles as the sun sets on Saturday 18th July in Victoria Park, with the Mayor Kate Bielby starting off the pedalling. There will be a large open area for people to picnic in and relax as they watch the movie, with the bicycles at the back.
There will be popcorn on sale, Lungi Babas will have a food tent open and the cafe will be serving a special range of falafels, wraps and salads to take away (until 9.00pm).
Tickets are still on sale through the Crowdfunder website at www.crowdfun der.co.uk/pedal-powered-cinema-for-frome, and the printed tickets will shortly be available in Frome Wholefoods. They are priced at £10 per person (‘under 5s’ free) with all profits going to Frome’s Missing Link.
The event will start at 5.30pm in the park, where there will be a chance to find out about progress of Frome’s Missing Link and buy raffle tickets or have your bike spruced up by the ‘bike wash’. Organisers are also planning a ‘bike jumble’ where you’ll be able to pick up secondhand bike items for a donation to Frome’s Missing Link.
Some great raffle prizes have already been secured, including a £50 voucher from Live 2 Ride, racing shirts from the Bike Academy, and a galvanised steel bike horn from Ollie Downward.
At 6.00pm, organisers plan to have a movie in a tent to allow younger children to enjoy the experience too. Space will be limited, so tickets for this show will only be available on the day.
The main film will begin at around 9.00pm, as it becomes dark enough to see the screen. Filmgoers are advised to bring a torch.
In the event of wet weather, the event will be held at the Steiner Academy in their hall. Timings will be similar, and details of what is happening will be sent out through the Facebook event page, the Crowdfunder messaging system and on the Sustainable Frome website (www.transition frome.og.uk).
Organisers are also looking for volunteers to help put up tents and gazebos for the event, to help with the ‘bike wash’ and to steward the movie in the evening. Please contact helenjohnstone@yahoo.com if you can help.
Sustainable Frome is organising the event to help build the next phase of the cycle path, which will ultimately create a traffic-free route from the very centre of Frome to the Sustrans Colliers Way cycle path, which leads to Radstock. At the moment, the route ends at Great Elm and cyclists have to use local roads to get into Frome.
The organisers say that the path, which has recently been extended from Welshmill towards Great Elm, will be a fantastic safe way for people to scoot, rollerskate, run, walk and cycle in the town.
